“OrphanAnesthesia” is a common project of the Scientific Working Group of Paediatric Anaesthesia of the German Society of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care Medicine (DGAI e.V.), Orphanet as well as the European Society of Paediatric Anaesthesia (ESPA) with the aim of contributing to the safety of patients by publishing recommendations for anaesthesia in patients who suffer from rare diseases.
The project was initiated by the Scientific Working Group of Paediatric Anaesthesia of the German Society of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care Medicine in 2005. At this time, the idea of an open-access-database with information related to anaesthesia in patients with rare diseases was born.
Recognizing the dimensions of this idea, the search for a European organization providing a suitable framework began. At the beginning of the project, “OrphanAnesthesia” was inspired by Orphanet, which is a well-established portal for rare diseases and orphan drugs. We will continue to cultivate a close partnership with the European anaesthesiological societies.
"OrphanAnesthesia" will prepare and publish concise recommendations for anaesthesiologists as well as patients to help planning and performing anaesthesia in patients suffering from rare diseases. These recommendations will be peer reviewed readily-accessible and reflect the best evidence available.
